Description

Compendium for Greenlandic 1 is the basic book you use in Greenlandic 1 courses. It is almost identical to Kompendium til Grønlandsk 1, 4th edition (in Danish). The book can be shipped, or you can pick it up at our address, Saqqarliit 38, Nuuk. It is already included in a digital version on the online courses.

Kompendium til Grønlandsk 1 covers the material covered in our beginner courses and requires no prior knowledge of the language. The material is designed for teaching purposes and is not originally intended for self-study. However, many more exercises have now been added for you to work on independently during or after class. The final part of the book consists of a number of overviews, including a collection of conjugation tables, which are also relevant for advanced learners.

The book is a mix of linguistic exercises and cultural information.

If you buy the book because you are going on a course, you will receive the first course.

Excerpt from the review:

“There are several points that I find highly recommendable and that I think any designer of second language learning materials should take note of.

First, it is aimed at the non-linguist, but in such a way that the linguist will find meaningful data in it (and I just picked up new data points for my own typological datasets through this compendium alone). You don’t need any background knowledge at all to make use of and understand this workbook.

Secondly, in the few pages it has, it lets you go from not knowing a single word of Greenlandic to being able to introduce yourself at a kaffillerneq (kaffemik) and participate in both birthday celebrations and talk about upcoming plans. And it lets you take that journey without inundating you with abstract morphosyntactic notions and terminology, despite the highly polysynthetic nature of this language. In fact, the approach seems to simply dive into the language in a kind of immersion of written words, while gradually bringing out linguistic notions, all explained without resorting to impenetrable jargon. The reader wants to find out more, instead of feeling overwhelmed.”
