LearnGreenlandic GREENLAND was established when Per Langgård’s company LearnGreenlandic/Langgard Consulting changed its strategy and ceased its operations in Greenland in order to move to Denmark.
Jeg er født i Danmark, men har boet hele mit voksenliv i Grønland. Her er jeg uddannet, her har jeg mit arbejde, her har jeg hus og familie. Jeg har studeret grønlandsk på Ilisimatusarfik, hvor meget af undervisningen foregår på grønlandsk. I 2022 fik jeg min kandidatgrad. Min uddannelse omfatter grønlandsk sprog, litteratur og medier, men jeg har primært interesseret mig for lingvistik og sprogtilegnelse.
I was born in Denmark, but have lived my entire adult life in Greenland. Here I am educated, here I have my job, here I have a house and family. I have studied Greenlandic at Ilisimatusarfik where much of the teaching is conducted in Greenlandic. In 2022 I got my master’s degree. My education includes Greenlandic language, literature and media, but I have primarily been interested in linguistics and language acquisition.
Jeg har arbejdet for Oqaasileriffik, det grønlandske sprogsekretariat, i fem år, hvor jeg var med til at udvikle maskinoversættelse, analyserede grønlandske ord og sætninger tilføjede indhold til en grønlandsk-dansk ordbog. På den måde bidrog jeg til oversættelsesmaskinen Nutserut, som stadig er under udvikling.
I have worked for Oqaasileriffik, the Greenlandic language secretariat, for five years. I was engaged in developing machine translation, I analyzed Greenlandic words and phrases, and I added content to a Greenlandic-Danish dictionary. In this way I contributed to the translation machine [Nutserut], which is still under development.
Siden 2016 har jeg undervist i grønlandsk i Nuuk, fra 2018 i mit eget firma, LearnGreenlandic GREENLAND. Jeg varetager fysiske kurser i Nuuk og online-kurser med både dansk og engelsk som undervisningssprog, og guider også af og til turister i Nuukfjorden.
Since 2016 I have been teaching Greenlandic, from 2018 in my own company, LearnGreenlandic GREENLAND. I teach Greenlandic classes in Nuuk and online courses with Danish and English as languages of instruction, and I also occasionally guide tourists in the Nuuk Fjord.
Jeg er dybt fascineret af det grønlandske sprog. Én ting er grammatikken, som jeg har en lingvistisk interesse i, men jeg synes også, at det er enormt interessant, at man kan danne ord og sætninger, som er umiddelbart forståelige, på en helt anderledes måde, end man kan på dansk. Jeg ser de kreative muligheder i sproget som en gave til den, der mangler ordforråd, men som alligevel bliver i stand til at kommunikere effektivt.
I am deeply fascinated by the Greenlandic language. One thing is grammar, which I have a linguistic interest in, but I also think it is very interesting that you can form words and sentences that are immediately understandable in a completely different way than you can in my mothertongue Danish. I see the creative possibilities of the language as a gift to those who lack vocabulary, but nevertheless become able to communicate effectively.
Når jeg ikke beskæftiger mig med grønlandsk sprog og kultur, udfører jeg blandt andet matrosarbejde og arbejder som håndværker. Så kommer jeg ud i naturen og får brugt kroppen og ikke kun hovedet. I min fritid dyrker jeg kampsport og danser kalattuut, grønlandsk polka.
When I am not dealing with Greenlandic language and culture, I, among other things, work as a sailor or as a craftsman. Then I get into the wild, feel the nature and weather and get to use my body and not just my head. In my spare time I practice martial arts and dance kalattuut, the Greenlandic polka.
Apart from Liv Molich, who teaches most courses, several other talented people are connected to the company.
Flemming A. J. Nielsen is employed at Ilisimatusarfik, the University of Greenland, but also has the role of bookkeeper in LearnGreenlandic GREENLAND. Flemming is a very skilled philologist and the one in the world who is best at deciphering, reading and interpreting 18th century Greenlandic. He knows an incredible amount about Greenlandic language, history and culture, and he often teaches one or more of our courses. Flemming has written many articles about Greenland and has also published, among other things, a grammar of Biblical Hebrew and a Greenlandic grammar. Flemming has also translated parts of the Bible from Biblical Hebrew into colloquial Danish. In addition, Flemming currently leads Nordisk Koncertkor, the Nordic Concert Choir in Nuuk.
Michelle Danielsen has been in charge of teaching Danish for many years, but also taught beginner’s courses in Greenlandic years ago. Michelle is very popular among the students and manages to create a relaxed and learning-promoting atmosphere in the room. Michelle began studying linguistics at Aarhus University before changing her field of study to Greenlandic cultural and social history at Ilisimatusarfik.
Pakkutannguaq Larsen teaches the most advanced courses in Greenlandic where the focus is on conversation. Pakkutannguaq is good at keeping the conversation flowing in Greenlandic and creating a relaxed atmosphere. Pakkutannguaq has a good understanding of foreigners’ problems in connection with learning Greenlandic and is educated in Greenlandic at Ilisimatusarfik.
Liv Mejer Larsen has been a part of LearnGreenlandic for several years and has made a huge effort in teaching Greenlandic and the development of material alongside her job at the high school in Nuuk. Liv is very committed, innovative, well prepared and pedagogically skilled. Liv is taking a break from teaching due to a job change, but hopefully she will have time to teach again.
Pipaluk Kristensen, Christian Wennecke, Stian Lybech, Elisabeth Levisen, Therese Lind Benhardt, Paneeraq Nielsen, Anette Bojsen, Susan Bjørn and several others have over the years taught one or more courses at LearnGreenlandic GREENLAND. Some of them still show up once in a while and run a course.
When you need to develop and practice language competence, you can do it in several ways. You can, for example, use the natural method, which quite simply says that you just have to throw yourself into it and stay in Greenlandic-speaking environments, whereby the language acquisition happens by itself. Or you can fear making mistakes and therefore go the exact opposite way with a conviction that you must have a complete grasp of grammar and be able to understand everything in detail so you don’t say anything in the new language before after several years.
Or you can be somewhere in between, and that’s what we do. The early communication and play with the language is important to maintain motivation and avoid it becoming an insurmountable barrier later in the learning process to start speaking the language. But a thorough introduction to grammar is important to be able to put words and sentences together so that they become understandable, and especially so that you can correct your language, so that language skills develop and communication flows more easily.
On the courses, you therefore learn both words and sentences that you can go out and use immediately, but you will also be introduced to the grammar. We try to keep the grammar on a general comprehensible level where it is explained with ordinary words and supported by examples and exercises, and we use the grammatical competence to creatively formulate the sentences the students need. And then the teaching is spiced up with stories about Greenlandic or Danish history and culture, with the addition of our own experiences, stories and blunders.
